The City Attorney provides legal advice, support and direction to the City Council and the City staff in their capacity of performing official City duties. The Attorney’s functions include review of contracts, drafting of Ordinances, defending the City against legal actions and prosecuting cases on behalf of the City.
D.J. Doody, City Attorney
Mr. Doody has served as the City Attorney for the City of Oakland Park since 2001 and previously served in that capacity from 1985 to 1997. He is a shareholder in the law firm of Goren, Cherof, Doody, Ezrol, P.A., Fort Lauderdale. He is Martindale-Hubbell peer review rated (AV) and maintains a practice in the areas of: Commercial Real Estate, Government Law, Litigation and Corporate Law. His government-related clients include the representation of municipalities, community redevelopment agencies and a water control district.
Mr. Doody and his firm provide full legal service to the City in all legal areas, includinng litigation, legal interpretation, drafting and administration of municipal ordinances and contracts, real estate transactions and land use matters. His services also include general legal advice on matters including labor relations, civil service rights, bond issues, planning and zoning, code enforcement, and community redevelopment.
Over the course of several decades, Mr. Doody has represented governmental entities such as municipalities, community redevelopment agencies, housing authorities and water control districts. In his capacity either as a city attorney or general counsel, he has the responsibility of addressing and resolving all facets of legal issues attendant to the day-to-day operation of a governmental entity. He also represents governmental clients in both Federal and Florida State courts when the litigation involves constitutional issues, zoning issues and employee relations.
He is admitted to the Florida and Illinois Bars and admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court, Southern District of Florida; the U.S. Court of Appeals, 11th Circuit; and the U.S. Supreme Court.
Mr. Doody holds a J.D. from Northern Illinois University, an M.P.A. from Florida Atlantic University and a B.A. from the Citadel. He is a member of American Bar Association and currently serves as President of the Florida Municipal Attorney's Association.
