Code Enforcement is responsible for the preservation and improvement of housing and property standards through enforcement of the City Code of Ordinances and Regulations. Complaints of code violations are called in to the City or are initiated when violations are observed by an officer. Some common violations include overgrown grass and weeds; junk on private property or swales, abandoned, derelict, or unlicensed vehicles; deteriorating housing conditions, illegal signs and zoning violations.
Typical enforcement action starts with citizen contact to discuss the violation, required compliance action and the time frame for such compliance. The property is re-inspected after the agreed time period set for compliance and if the violation remains the officer will take the next step by serving an official Notice of Violation, which is putting the same information that was verbally discussed into writing. If not corrected within the time period given for compliance, then further action such as a Code Enforcement Board hearing, towing of vehicles, removal of junk or mowing of property by the City or a contractor may result, all of which are subject to costs being paid by the property owner.
A publication entitled "Guide to Codes" is available at the Code Enforcement Division at the City's Municipal Building, 5399 North Dixie Highway.
